Stevens paints an incredible picture of two sisters growing up. From their unique bond to their clashing and fights, it is an incredibly relatable tale. What drove me crazy about this novel, in a way that kept me turning pages faster and faster, was the realistic and gut-wrenching portrayal of the way young girls treat each other. I was furious that manipulative characters and mean tricks went unnoticed by others.
The story begins with two sisters, both in high school, who allow life and drama to inevitably come between them. When the younger sister, Nicole, is horrifically murdered one night, older sister Toni and her boyfriend Ryan are pegged for the murder and sent to prison. They are released years later determined to prove their innocence. This proves more difficult than they had hoped as the same manipulation and drama from high school continues to ruin their lives and wrongly label them as troubled people.
Nothing prepared me for the twist in the end. I had my theories about what was going on between the sisters, friends, and how high school life was coming between them. But in the end, I was shocked. Stevens did a fantastic job depicting very real emotions in the characters and allowing the reader to root for the good guys. Looking for a thrilling novel that leaves your mouth agape at the end when the truth is revealed? Look no further! Chevy Stevens has wound many very real and very personal themes, topics, and situations together like a pro.
