The Giver by Lois Lowry

Interesting how such a thought-provoking and philosophically intriguing plot is categorized as a children's novel! The story is strongly reminiscent of many other novels which depict a cult-like utopia of apparent perfection. Author Lois Lowry adds her own elements of uniqueness to the culture creating a vivid picture of the characters' lifestyle.

The Giver is a fascinating tale that follows young Jonas through his journey of becoming The Giver. It is a well-written, easily followed plot which slowly reveals itself as being much more complicated and involved than at first glance.

I loved the ending! The ambiguity and open-ended final scene leaves the reader to draw their own conclusion; or at the very least left with a list of questions to ponder over many days.
