Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is the debut novel from Ransom Riggs. I tore through the pages of this book because I was so eager to soak it all in. The whole story was so wonderfully imagined, I got completely caught up in the characters, the story, and the great historical aspects. As a lover of both historical fiction and young adult novels, I couldn't get enough of this book.
What really makes the book are the great photographs that are included. These old, spooky photos of peculiar children add to the overall eerie theme and bring you closer to the story as a reader. For me, this story has something of everything I love to keep me interested the whole way through. First, you have the young kid who feels like he wants more out of his life - he's a character that any reader would be able to relate to. He wants so much to be a part of something exciting, always aspiring to live a life like his Grandpa. Like many young kids, Jacob is quick to believe and has an innocent naivete that is contagious. Second, I loved the setting of the abandoned orphanage that held such a great history, and I love how Riggs brought life to this historical aspect. Finally, this book had the perfect amount of suspense. The photographs were the perfect visual to add - they made the story seem so real and more exciting!
This is a great read that ties together adventure, history, and fantasy. I can't wait to read Riggs' sequel, Hollow City - look for a review soon!
