I read night film for a book club and I loved it! I've recently been on a kick with mystery and crime novels and night film has become a favorite. What I loved most about the book was the amount of thought and research that clearly went into it. The accompanying photos, newspaper clips, and reports really made the book for me. Reading the actual files alongside the detective made it so realistic and interesting. As the reader, you feel like you are the one trying to solve the mystery rather than just being along for the ride as you watch someone else piece things together.
The book is definitely very dark and haunting - there are questions of devil worship and possession throughout. The story begins with the death of Ashley Cordova, daughter of the infamous filmmaker Stanislas Cordova. Detective Scott McGrath is determined to find the truth and expose Cordova for the criminal he believes him to be. The book has a very film noir feel to it and progresses pretty slowly, but I felt that it still held my interest because I was interested in the theme of the book and figuring out the history of the Cordova family.
I would recommend this book to fans of Gillian Flynn's novels. Her stories hold a similar darkness to that of Night Film.
